Symphony, choirs combine for oratorio

In their annual tour de force, the Pittsburg State University Choirs and the Southeast Kansas Symphony will combine to present a Spring Oratorio at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, at Pittsburg’s First United Methodist Church, 5th and Pine. The performance features the music of Horatio Parker, in observance of the 150th anniversary of his birth.

The concert will open with Parker's Concerto for Organ and Orchestra, Op.55, under the direction of Raúl Munguía, conductor of the SEK Symphony. This is the final event in the symphony’s 2012-13 concert season.

Susan Marchant, director of choral activities at PSU, will direct Parker’s oratorio “Hora Novissima,” Op. 30. The performing forces will include the PSU Choirs, with guest singers from the community, and the SEK Symphony.

“Hora Novissima” calls for a quartet of soloists and this year, all of the soloists will be PSU alumni. They are Angela Shoup, soprano; Mary Jo Harper, alto; Josh Simpson, tenor; and Jason Hubbard, bass.

The Latin text for the piece is drawn from the writings of 12th-century Benedictine monk, Bernard of Cluny. It is conveyed through 11 movements that include solo arias, quartets, and choruses.

Tickets for the concert are $7 for adults and $5 for students 13-18. Youngsters 12 and under are admitted free. Tickets are available in advance through the PSU Ticket Office, or at the door that afternoon.
