Student exceeds recycling goal

Can one person make a difference? Justin Gambill did.

For his senior project, Gambill, a social work and Spanish major from Chetopa, Kan., conducted an E-Waste Recycling Day on campus. His goal was to collect 100 e-waste items for recycling and $100 in donations for the SEK Recycling Center.

“More electronics are being thrown away in landfills wasting precious metals, such as copper, and releasing various toxins such as lead, barium and cadmium, that are dangerous for us and the Earth,” Gambill wrote. “The epidemic of throwing away electronics can be avoided simply by recycling them!”

The weather was cold and rainy, forcing Gambill to move his collection from the Oval in the center of campus to the garage in the Physical Plant, but he was still successful. By the end of the day, a smiling Gambill had collected 302 items for recycling and had received $111.90 in donations.
