School officials meet new graduating teachers at Teacher Interview Day

Sadie Thomas, Julie Fecke and Andrea Lindsay, all elementary education majors, sat together Thursday as they waited for interviews at Pittsburg State University’s Teacher Interview Day.

The event allows school districts to interview numerous new graduating teachers in a short amount of time.

Fecke, who lives in Chetopa, said she was looking for a job “within driving distance” of home. Likewise, Lindsay, from Girard, had southeast Kansas on her map.

“I’m kind of keeping an open mind about where I want to teach,” said Jeremy Gee, of Frontenac, who plans on teaching secondary level biology.

Math teacher Reine Loflin, Iola, added that although she was looking for something in southeast Kansas, she was open to any area.

As the students waited their turns, officials from more than 60 school districts from Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma asked questions and took notes, hoping to find the perfect matches for the positions they had open.

Mindy Cloninger, director of the Office of Career Services, said about 450 interviews were scheduled.

Scott Currier, principal of Lakewood Middle School in Overland Park, Kan., and also a PSU alumnus, said he was looking for teachers in some specific areas.

“I’m impressed by the students I’ve met,” he said.
