PSU selects Student Employees of the Year

About 800 Pittsburg State University student workers keep the campus humming each day and hundreds more play important roles in businesses across the community.

The university honored all of those students on Monday and selected two as the 2013 Student Employees of the Year.

Ashley Ferris, a junior from Carl Junction, Mo., is the on-campus Student Employee of the Year. She works in the PSU School of Construction Office.

Rita Hardesty, administrative specialist in the School of Construction Office, said she is impressed by Ashley’s level of involvement in every aspect of the school.

“Not only is she a good assistant in the day-to-day operation, but she is a great ambassador for the program,” Hardesty said. “She helps students, visitors and faculty on a routine basis in a very professional and appropriate manner.”

Kasey Paddock, a junior from Clinton, Mo., is the off-campus Student Employee of the Year. He works at Unique Metal Fabrication in Pittsburg.

“Kasey is the ‘go-to’ person at Unique Metal Fabrications,” said Quality Assurance Manager Chris Jordan. “He supervises a crew of two to four college students. Kasey is willing to get down and dirty to get the job done as well as always paying great attention to the details. His constant desire to excel has made him a valuable asset to Unique Metal Fabrications, Inc.”

In addition to Student Employee of the Year, the Office of Career Services also recognized first and second runners-up in both categories.

In the on-campus category, the first runner-up was Cory Kiesling, a senior from Shawnee, Kan., who works in the Office of Alumni and Constituent Relations. The second runner-up was Jordan Boyd, a graduate student from Afton, Okla., who works in the Office of Student Financial aid.

In the off-campus category, the first runner-up was James Collver, a junior from Pittsburg who works for the Colonial Fox Theatre Foundation in Pittsburg. The second runner-up was Lynsey Sholders, a sophomore from Newton, Kan., who works for Little’s, Inc., in Pittsburg.

This is the 24th year that PSU has selected a Student Employee of the Year as part of National Student Employment Week, which this year is April 7-13.
