SEK Symphony performs March 13

The Southeast Kansas Symphony will present its third subscription concert at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, in the Sharon K. Dean Recital Hall, McCray Hall, on the Pittsburg State University campus.

The concert will feature cellist Matthew Herrn, peforming the timeless Saint-Saëns cello concerto No. 1. The program will also include Leonard Bernstein's famous “Mambo” from “West Side Story,” Edward Elgar's “Ninrod” from “Enigma Variations” and Arturo Márquez's “Danzón” No.2.

The Friends of the Symphony and the Southeast Kansas Symphony board will recognize Paul Carlson, a longtime member of the symphony and PSU Music Department professor emeritus, with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Carlson still collaborates with the ensemble and plays in the first violin section.

The symphony will dedicate one of its pieces to the University of Southern Mississippi School of Music for damages caused by a tornado in February. Southern Miss has initiated a rebuilding campaign, but classes are still being held in churches, high schools, and other alternative places since any of the three buildings.

Symphony Director Raúl Munguía is a USM alumnus who was living with his family on the Southern Miss campus when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast.

“I feel very bad not only for the university but also for the community,” Munguía said.
