Pittsburg State prepares for severe weather season

Pittsburg State University will take part in Tuesday’s statewide tornado drill, which is the highlight of this year’s Severe Weather Awareness Week.

The drill, which will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., is meant to test the university’s alert systems, which include outdoor speakers, emergency texting service and social media outlets. In addition, the university’s public radio station, KRPS, will test its Emergency Alert System.

“We’re all aware of how quickly the weather can change, especially in the four-state area,” said Mike McCracken, director of university police and parking services. “It’s important that you take a moment to review your emergency plans and know what to do in the event of severe weather.”

Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Severe Weather Preparedness Week is a nationwide effort to increase awareness of severe weather and to motivate individuals, families, businesses, and communities to take actions that will prepare them in the event of severe weather.

A full description of the university’s severe weather plan and video presentation is available online at pittstate.edu/weather.

Information on the different types of severe weather such as tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flooding is available at www.weather.gov and ready.gov/severe-weather or the Spanish-language website www.listo.gov.
