KTC hosts Wood Tech Company Day

Wood technology companies from across the country got a close-up look at potential employees during the March 1 Wood Tech Company Day at Pittsburg State University’s Kansas Technology Center.

Nearly 20 companies from as far away as New Jersey and Florida visited PSU to take part in the annual spring event, which exposes PSU students to internship and employment opportunities.

“This is a wonderful event that educates our students about the opportunities and career pathways that exist for them,” Doug Hague, assistant professor in PSU’s technology and workforce learning, said. “We have companies from across the country that come to Pittsburg State to recruit our students, and we think that speaks volumes about the quality of program we have here. This is a win-win in that our students get great exposure to industry and industry gets great exposure to our students.”

Jonathan Adams, chief operating officer for Florida-based Adams Group, said this was his company’s first trip to Pittsburg State.

“We were very impressed from the start,” Adams said. “There aren’t a lot of institutions like this in our neck of the woods, and to see the level of programs within the College of Technology is terrific. We’re here to recruit top talent, and it’s nice to find students who are trained in the things we’d want them to do. That helps us eliminate on-the-job training, and it makes PSU students very attractive to us.”

For the students, the event provides opportunities for networking with a variety of industry professionals.

“The really nice thing is that these companies are coming to us,” sophomore Dalton Gainer said. “We don’t have to go out and search for possible employers. They’re all right here, and you can compare them side-by-side. It’s a good opportunity to see what’s going on.”
