PSU helps families with important financial aid form

FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, is one of the most important documents students and their families should fill out for college, according to experts in Pittsburg State University’s Office of Student Financial Assistance.

To help ease the process, PSU is urging students thinking about college for the fall to participate in College Goal Sunday Kansas, between 2 and 4 p.m. on Feb. 24, in PSU’s Student Welcoming Center (Horace Mann). Financial Aid staff will help students and their families fill out the important FAFSA and answer questions about financial aid.

“Some families may not fill out the FAFSA because they believe that their income is too high for their students to qualify for need-based aid,” said Tammy Higgins, director of the Office of Student Financial Aid. “But family income is just one of the factors considered to determine student aid eligibility. And even if the student doesn’t qualify for Pell grants, which go to the lowest-income students, there are a wide array of grants, scholarships and loans that use the information from the FAFSA.”

Higgins said there is another incentive for students and parents to come to College Goal Sunday.

“It's definitely worth their time to stop by this event,” Higgins said. “One lucky participant will win a $500 scholarship."  

College Goal Sunday Kansas is supported by the Lumina Foundation and coordinated by the Kansas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (KASFAA). The annual event is sponsored by USA Funds and Lumina Foundation for Education.
