Campus preps for snow

The Boy Scouts aren’t the only ones who live by the motto, “Be Prepared.” On Monday, Feb. 25, Pittsburg State University physical plant crews were busy making sure they were ready for the possibility that a second winter storm in five days could dump snow on the campus.

“We’re making sure all of the vehicles are gassed up and all of the equipment is in good working order,” said Cate Breneman, PSU’s grounds maintenance supervisor.

Breneman said her 14-person crew will be ready to clear campus sidewalks and parking lots if the storm develops as predicted.

In addition to the campus employees, Pitt State also contracts with private firms for snow removal on the biggest parking lots.

Breneman said that although her department uses trucks with snowplows and other large pieces of equipment, some of the work is always by hand.

“There are places the equipment just can’t go. Sometimes it comes down to shoveling by hand and I’m not exempt from that,” she laughed.
