Review names PSU one of the Best in the Midwest

Pittsburg State University is one of the best colleges and universities in the Midwest, according to the Princeton Review. PSU was one of 153 colleges that the company recommended in its Best-in-the-Midwest section of its website feature, "2013 Best Colleges: Region by Region," which posted Aug. 20, and was the only regional university from Kansas on the list.

The Review noted PSU’s small class sizes and “big-university” campus atmosphere as well as its location in a safe and affordable community. The Review quoted students who praised professors who are “very knowledgeable...and always more than willing to help outside of class.”

“We believe strongly that Pittsburg State University offers a high-quality academic experience in an unmatched campus atmosphere and does so at a cost that remains affordable,” said Dr. Bill Ivy, associate vice president for enrollment management and student services. “It is good to be recognized for the hard work that has made all this possible.”

Robert Franek, Princeton Review’s senior vice president and publisher, said Pittsburg State and the other universities on their regional-best list were chosen primarily for their academic programs.

“From several hundred schools in each region, we winnowed our list based on institutional data we collected directly from the schools, our visits to schools over the years, and the opinions of our staff, plus college counselors and advisers whose recommendations we invited,” Franek said. “We also take into account what students at the schools reported to us about their campus experiences on our 80-question student survey for this project. Only schools that permit us to independently survey their students are eligible to be considered for our regional-best lists."

The Review’s Midwest region includes the states of Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Nationally, the universities chosen for the Review’s regional-best lists constitute about 25 percent of the nation’s four-year colleges and universities.
