First-year students honored

More than 358 Pittsburg State University students were honored for their academic achievement by induction into the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society in ceremonies on March 11 in Memorial Auditorium.

Phi Eta Sigma is a national honor society that recognizes students for their scholarship in their first year of college. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale to be eligible for membership.

Heather Eckstein, director of first-year programs at PSU, said this is the first year for Phi Eta Sigma on the PSU campus and the response from students has been enthusiastic.

“A student’s first year in college is so important and, for some, may be the most difficult as they adjust to campus life,” Eckstein said. “It is important that we celebrate the hard work and scholarship of these outstanding women and men.”

The group of inductees this spring is larger than what might be expected in a normal year, Eckstein said, because for its founding year at PSU, Phi Eta Sigma’s membership is open to any student who met the honor society’s requirements during their first college year.

In addition to PSU President Steve Scott, John W. Sagabiel, Phi Eta Sigma’s national grand secretary-treasurer, spoke to the inductees and their families and each inductee was recognized individually.
