Matthew Montague


About Matthew G. Montague

Matthew Montague, Professor of Music Education, joined the Pittsburg State University faculty in 1999. He is the Coordinator of Music Education, teaches undergraduates and graduate students, majors and non-majors on various aspects of choral music education, music appreciation, and music theory. In addition, he is liaison with the College of Education, oversees student teachers, supervises graduate research projects, and advises the Collegiate NAfME chapter. Prior to his appointment at PSU, Dr. Montague was a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of Oregon where he conducted the Women's Chorus, Men's Chorus, and supervised student teachers. Before moving to Oregon, he was Director of Choral Organizations and chaired the Foreign Language Department at Preston High School (Idaho).

Dr. Montague has chaired numerous Kansas State Department of Education Music Program Review teams, and was an appointed member of a KSDE/National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education Board of Examiners on-site accreditation team. He has also worked with Lumen Learning as a course developer for Open Educational Resources (OER). His research interests include teacher induction processes, learning acquisition, and social learning systems. His fluency in and love of the Spanish language enable him to explore and facilitate learning among diverse populations. He carried out an Exploratory Study Abroad in Cusco, Perú, and taught at La Universidad Católica in Asunción, Paraguay.

Dr. Montague has conducted hundreds of choral performances in the United States, Russia, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. His conducting experience includes non-audition middle school choirs, regional high school honor choirs, and master class performances with the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus and Orchestra. A recipient of the Idaho Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, he has been active as a clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor in Kansas and throughout the western United States.

Dr. Montague received a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Brigham Young University, a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Oregon, and a Ph.D. in Music Education, also from the University of Oregon. In addition to his degrees, he completed master classes in conducting under Helmuth Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival. Professional memberships include the National Association for Music Education, American Choral Directors Association, College Music Society, and Society for Research in Music Education.
