Alumni to play roles in spring production in honor of 10th season at the Bicknell Center

To coincide with the 10th anniversary season of the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts at Pittsburg State University, alumni of the Communication Department will play roles in Pitt State Theatre’s spring production, “Love/Sick.”

It runs April 24-27 in the Dotty and Bill Miller Theater.

“I always dreamed of finding a way to invite some of our alumni back to campus. Since this year is the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, I knew this was a great opportunity for our current students to get to work with those who came before them,” said Director Megan Westhoff (BA '02, MA '04).

On a Friday night in September, somewhere in suburban America, different couples are at a relationship crossroads. Whether it’s new beginnings, broken hearts, or second chances, the humorous and heart-wrenching will be explored in the dark comedy.

The playwright, John Cariani, is best-known for "Almost, Maine,” one of the most produced plays in the U.S. While that play tackles the moments of falling in love, “Love/Sick” focuses on the disappointments of the human heart.

In both, Cariani uses a vignette style structure, which is a collection of short scenes comprised of different characters focusing on a similar theme.

The structure of “Love/Sick” offers the opportunity to rehearse scenes independently and weave them together into a cohesive whole.

“This is a love letter from me to our beloved alumni who have helped to shape a collaborative, collegial, and high-quality theater program, so this is a chance for them to see their work paid forward to our current students,” said Westhoff.

The acting ensemble includes Aaron Lawson (Grove, Oklahoma), Easton King (Frontenac), Hannah Davis (Galena), Jake Forsythe (Pittsburg), Kendra Johnson (Girard), Mia Garrett (Paola), Taye Witherspoon (Carthage), and Tyller Zacher (Lawrence).

Department of Communication alumni joining the acting ensemble include Kristen Livingston (BS '07 and MA '08), Kristy Magee (MA '12), Megan Reed (BS '17), Michael Fienen (BA '04), and Ross Stone (BS '10).

The production staff includes Linden Little (MA '11), scenic and lighting designer, and Lisa Quinteros (BA '98), costume designer.

For the season, Pitt State Theatre is collecting needed items for Safehouse Crisis Center. Donations of shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper, disinfecting wipes, laundry detergent, razors, feminine hygiene products, and baby diapers (all sizes) will be collected at the door of each show.

“We appreciate our community’s support of the performing and this is one way we can give toward the greater good of our neighbors and friends,” said Westhoff.
