Pitt State offers youth summer camps in variety of topics 

Youth will have opportunities this summer to pursue interests such as nursing, football, music, construction, robotics, nature, and more while having hands-on fun in day camps offered by Pittsburg State University. Enrollment is limited. Learn more at pittstate.edu/summercamps 

Construction 

Youth ages 9-14 will get a fast-paced look at the materials, processes, and design methods involved in the construction industry from July 7-11 (afternoons). They'll learn 3D building modeling, problem solving, bridge building, safety, and build a doghouse with construction faculty at the Crossland Technology Center. A second camp July 14-18 (afternoons) will take them to the next level.  

Football 

Football summer camps are planned for young athletes under the direction of Coach Tom Anthony assisted by his staff and players. Camps will be held on May 29 (youth basic skills), June 13 (high school prospects – padded)), and July 26 (high school prospects – padded); each will have a different focus.  

Music 

Four summer opportunities for youth interested in music are being planned by the Pitt State Music Department, to be taught by music faculty on June 5 (band), June 12 (piano), June 18 (strings), and June 26 (voice and audition). On Sept. 29, a “camp” will be offered to high school students to help them prepare for district music auditions.  

Nature 

Nature Reach Camps are back this summer for youth who will be starting grades 1-3 (June 16) and grade 1 (June 24). Youth will interact with live animals, explore nature, and participate in games and activities at the Nature Reach preserve southwest of Pittsburg.  

Nursing  

This free camp will be led on June 12 by faculty and senior students in McPherson Hall and Simulation Hospital, home to the School of Nursing. Youth will rotate through six stations to learn about CPR, AEDs, and handwashing, compete in Ace wrap races and a heart blood-flow obstacle course, explore simulated patient care, and use the Anatomage virtual patient.  

Reading and Language 

The Center for Reading will offer a Secret Codes Camp for children who want to get a jump start on reading or are struggling to learn to read. The camp uses cutting-edge techniques and will be held June 2-July 25, with one 50-minute session per day. 

An English & Culture Summer Camp is being organized by the Intensive English Program in partnership with the International Programs & Services office in two, four-week sessions in June and July for those who wish to strengthen their English skills and experience American culture.  

Robotics  

Youth ages 9-13 and will explore the use of teamwork, programming, brainstorming, construction techniques, robotic basics, and electro-mechanics July 7-11 (mornings) as they dive into the world of robotics with engineering technology faculty at the Crossland Technology Center. A second camp July 14-18 will take them to the next level.  

STEM 

Personnel at Block22 will offer youth in grades K-2 (June 17), grades 3-4 (June 18), and grades 5-6 (June 19) creative opportunities and hands-on activities in science and technology, including coding “Beebots” and using a laser engraver and 3D printer. The camps are free. 

Theatre 

In July, a new offering, “Rising Starz Theatre Camp,” will be held for youth ages 13-18 at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts under the direction of Pittsburg Community Theatre and Pitt State Theatre. It will conclude with public performances Aug. 1 and Aug. 2. This year’s show: “Beetlejuice Jr.”
