Construction students complete latest community project

Students in Pitt State's School of Construction senior project class spent the semester building a new pavilion between the clubhouse and the new mini-golf course at Four Oaks Golf Course, a city-owned course that is open to the public.

The project provided them with valuable, on the job, hands-on experience.

The new, ADA-compliant 18-hole mini-golf course, funded by a private grant, opened earlier this year to replace an aging course with poor drainage. The pavilion will open for birthday parties and other special events in the spring to extend offerings to the public.

Pittsburg Parks and Recreation Director Toby Book praised the students' efforts and the lasting contribution they were making to the Pittsburg community.

It's not unusual for seniors in the School of Construction to hear such praise; each year, they build community projects as part of their capstone class. Last year, their work included a 270-foot replacement section on the cart path at Four Oaks, a Habitat for Humanity home in Arma, a new house for a family in need in Frontenac, and improved baseball/softball diamonds in Girard.

In recent years they've also built pavilions at Schlanger Park and the Pittsburg High School tennis courts, and a sandbox and pavilion at the Head Start center in Pittsburg.

Seniors say the projects have taught them job site skills and management, including costing projects, creating contracts, running surveying equipment, and determining batch work for concrete.
