World AIDS Week recognized

December 02, 2008 12:00AM

Pittsburg State University will recognize World AIDS Week the first week of December with a slate of events to help commemorate those who have lost their lives to the disease and others who may be struggling with it.

The week's theme is "Lead - Empower - Deliver - Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise." In keeping with that theme, Gorillas In Your Midst and Student Prevention and Wellness at PSU will hold the following events:

AIDS Quilt Display and Information Table:

Sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, on loan from the Tulsa Area Names Project, which has memorial panels dedicated to the memory of loved ones who have died from AIDS, will be on display daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the glass point of Overman Student Center. Brochures, red ribbons and posters will be distributed.

Week of Dialogue:

Throughout the week, PSU professors and instructors have been asked to include discussion about HIV-AIDS in their classrooms using both general information and specific talking points provided by Student Prevention and Wellness.

AIDS Memorial Observance:

A memorial observance will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in front of the quilt display in Overman, to honor of all who have lost their lives to the disease.

Monetary donations will be accepted at the quilt display site or can be sent to Student Prevention and Wellness, 105 Overman. Donations will be forwarded to Doctors Without Borders, the Nobel Prize-winning medical relief organization, with the stipulation that the money be used for AIDS relief in developing countries.

All of the activities are sponsored by Gorillas In Your Midst and PSU Student Prevention and Wellness. For more information, contact J.T. Knoll at (620) 235-4062 or e-mail
