With the opening of a new academic year just around the corner, the Pittsburg State University art galleries are gearing up for some new exhibits. "Light Moves," an exhibit of hanging textiles by artist Cathy Breslaw of Carlsbad, Calif., will open in the University Gallery on August 23 and will run through Sept. 23.

Breslaw is known for her use of an industrial mesh as a base upon which she weaves, tucks, wraps and ties textiles into forms that combine the traits of paintings, sculptures and installations. Her creations invite the viewer to consider materials that go beyond their original function and are given new life as art instead of discarded goods.

Breslaw earned an MFA in visual arts from Claremont Graduate University. He work has been displayed in solo shows and in group exhibitions across the U.S.

The University Gallery is free and open to the public. The gallery, which is located in Porter Hall on the PSU campus, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. For more information, call the Department of Art at 620-235-4302 or Gallery Director Portico Bowman at 620-235-4305.
