The Provost's Leadership Council on 4/29/09 and effective immediately has approved the following policy for hiring Graduate Teaching Assistants for students who have not already earned a passing score on the SPEAK Test.
All prospective graduate teaching assistants, whose first language is not English, must be interviewed either face-to-face or by mediated means and have their competency in spoken English assessed by no fewer than three institutional personnel, one of whom shall be a student. The evaluators will complete the Spoken English Form indicating the evaluation of the interview. Additionally these students must submit a score of 22 on the Speaking section of the Test of English as a Foreign Language internet Based Test (TOEFL iBT). Students who did not have to submit a TOEFL score for admittance to the University because they graduated from our Intensive English Program or earned an undergraduate degree from an institution in the United States or an English speaking university, will be required to submit a TOEFL score as listed in this policy before being hired for a Teaching Assistant Position.
Departments can list a position as a Graduate Teaching Assistantship Non-Direct Teaching Position for positions that will not be involved in direct teaching of new information to students. Department's must complete the Graduate Teaching Assistantship Non-Direct Teaching Position Form before the start of each semester before the graduate student can be appointed or continue on an appointment. Student must submit a minimum score of 18 on the speaking section of the Test of English as a Foreign Language internet TOEFL Based Test (TOEFL iBT) to be eligible to be hired in a Non-Direct Teaching Position.
