Audio-Reader Network

Audio-Reader Network is an audio information service that provides audio access to print materials for people who have difficulty reading standard print due to vision loss, physical or learning disability, mobility challenges, and age. We are looking for volunteers in Pittsburg to volunteer as readers for a live broadcast of Pittsburg-area newspapers. We also use volunteers to prepare reading materials. An audition is required for readers.

Hours: The broadcasts run from 2-4pm every weekday afternoon; volunteers arrive by 1:45

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for volunteers 18 and older to be a Big. A Big would meet with their Little a few times a month for a couple hours at a time. Help make a difference in a child's life, become a Big.

Spend one hour a week with a boy/girl as a mentor.

Children's Advocacy Center, Inc.

Looking for volunteers/interns to take on various jobs. Tasks will vary across the organization and volunteers will have the opportunity to work with social services, law enforcement and other CAC members. All who are interested must complete an application and must pass a child abuse and neglect registry check and a criminal history check

The Harbor - Pittsburg Presbyterian Church Ministry

The Harbor is a program for Pittsburg area middle-school students that provides a safe and nurturing environment after school. Volunteers can help with tutoring and homework, open play and hangout time, snacks, Life-Lines (resources for students in need,) daily devotionals, enrichment, and life-skills activities.

Hours: Monday - Friday 3:15pm - 5:30pm

KVC Behavioral HealthCare

Volunteers would be hanging posters at libraries, community centers, grocery stores, banks, churches, schools, or anywhere that might catch attention. You would hang flyers to help bring information to people interested in providing care to one of the the 5,000+ children in foster care in Kansas.

Pittsburg Care and Rehabilitation

Pittsburg Care and Rehabilitation is combination of a skilled nursing facility, rehabilitation, and memory care units. Our activities department is seeking students to spend time with our memory care residents. For example, if you are music major we would love to hear you play music for us. Recreation students we have a recreation therapist available to assist with your practicum hours leading activity groups and games. This will be an excellent opportunity for you to work with a unique population.

Hours: Can be worked around class schedules.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is always looking to help those who need it most in the community. This winter, bell ringers are needed to staff all the kettle locations as part of the 2017 Red Kettle Campaign. Our goal is to raise $55,000.00 for the community of Pittsburg. Students are welcome to ring at their leisure from 10am-8pm, with shifts lasting approximately two hours. Christmas has an army, and you can join the fight with the Salvation Army; doing the most good. Students can sign up to ring the bells at

SEK Homeless Solutions Taskforce

Pittsburg State's Enactus is partnered with the Salvation Army in finding a solution to Pittsburg's homeless community. We are a group of volunteers dedicated to creating a temporary overnight homeless shelter. When temperatures drop to dangerous levels, we will be opening our shelter up to those who will accept it. There are several different avenues in volunteer help that we need, from overnight volunteers to construction help in building basic things, such as shelving. The necessary training for those interacting with the homeless is also provided, and experienced volunteers will assist you.

Hours: Depends on volunteer's interest. Ex. 6:00pm - 8:00am for overnight shift.

The Southeast Kansas Humane Society

The Southeast Kansas Humane Society is looking for volunteers. Volunteers will help with direct cleaning, care of animals, community events, donate items, shelter repairs and maintenance, foster pets or socalize with animals.

When: Monday - Saturday 11:00am - 4:00pm and Sunday 1:00pm - 4:00pm

TFI Family Services

Assist with childcare during support meeting. Tasks include playing games, making crafts, watching movies with the kids while the parents attend their foster care support meetings. Simply caring for the children during the meeting will help out in a big way. Background Checks required. 

Hours: Ongoing Monthly Meetings from 6:00pm - 8:00pm
