Outstanding Alumni share their stories with students
2013 Outstanding Alumni David Harrison, Angela Moriconi, Dottie Bringle and Gaberiel Bever.

Gaberiel Bever said the last time he gave a talk in the Biology Department was when he was a student.

“It was terrible, just terrible!” he said.

Bever, one of PSU’s four Outstanding Alumni Award recipients said he was looking forward to speaking to students on Friday in hopes of doing a better job the second time around.

“I’m exorcizing a demon,” he joked.

This year’s honorees came from very different backgrounds and careers, but they all had some similar messages to share with students.

“Don’t limit yourself,” Angela Moriconi advised. “Whatever appeals to you, you can do.”

“Embrace education and understand that you’ve got one opportunity to do it,” said Dottie Bringle.

Bever told students to “think big. Always ask ‘what can I do that is the most important with what I have?’ and if you can do that, your life will be interesting and full.”

“Find your passion,” Harrison said. “In order to be successful in life, you’ve got to work hard. Find something you’re good at and enjoy working hard at.”

The 2013 Outstanding Alumni Award recipients are a diverse group. Bever is a research scientist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and a member of the anatomy faculty at the New York Institute of Technology, Bringle is the former chief operating officer and chief nursing officer at St. John’s Hospital in Joplin, Harrison is a Jerry S. Rawls professor of finance at Texas Tech University and Moriconi is a freelance photojournalist with KCBS/KCAL-TV and KNBC-TV in Los Angeles.

In addition to speaking on campus, the award recipients were scheduled to attend a reception in their honor at 4:30 p.m. in the Wilkinson Alumni Center. They will ride in PSU’s Homecoming Parade at 9 a.m. on Saturday and will be recognized at the Homecoming football game at 2 p.m.
