The Pittsburg State University Art Galleries will open their 2012-2013 season on Aug. 23 with an exhibit of sculpture by artist David Marquez. The show, entitled “Vessels,” will run through Sept. 24 in the University Gallery in Porter Hall.

Chew 2 bronze by David MarquezMarquez received a master of arts degree in sculpture in 2002 and a master of fine arts degree in sculpture in 2003, both from the University of Iowa. Marquez has taught visual arts at Western Kentucky University since 2007 and is currently developing his work as a studio artist.

In his artist’s statement, Marquez wrote, “The objects of my recent series are built from forms that we see everyday -- bottles, containers and other mass produced packaging. From these forms, new forms are created, re-contextualizing their identity.”

In his work, Marquez plays off the ideas of mass production, cellular growth, biological reproduction and the abstract.

To close the show, Marquez will deliver a public lecture at 10 a.m. on Sept. 24 in the Governors Room of the Overman Student Center. The University Gallery is open from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free. For information about the gallery, contact S. Portico Bowman, gallery director, at 620-235-4305 or call the PSU Art Department at 620-235-4302.
