Position Responsibilities: The Dean of the College of Education reports directly to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean provides senior-level administrative expertise to non-Academic Deans, Department Chairs, Directors, academic departments and students on a routine basis. As a member of the University’s senior staff, the Dean participates in long-term planning and policy setting and provides administrative leadership for the College's non-academic administration including: budget and finance, human resources and departmental staffing, facilities planning and management, and information technology. In collaboration with department chairs, directors, and faculty the Dean establishes expectations and provides general oversight for the work of the academic departments. The Dean represents the College at University events, participates in Provost Leadership Council, University committees, and other activities across the University and community. The Dean leads the college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors as well as engagement in University initiatives such as recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate students.

Minimum Requirements:

  • An earned doctorate with a record of quality teaching, scholarly productivity, and service that warrants an appointment at the senior faculty level at PSU and tenure within a department residing in PSU’s College of Education
  • Substantial curricular development experience
  • Significant and diverse service experiences
  • Evidence of administrative accomplishments within the field of education and a proven record of leadership, academic advocacy, teambuilding, management, budget planning and control, and resource development
  • Evidence of strategic vision, a commitment to institutional excellence, and the ability to effectively and creatively implement strategic and academic plans
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others, establishing collegial relationships and work environments conducive to mission success
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all stakeholders (faculty, community partners, staff, etc.) to build/sustain internal and external relationships
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with universities, programs and communities of similar size and demographics
  • Significant background in assessment and accreditation issues (such as, CAEP and state accreditations of education programs)
  • Evidence of successful teaching and a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education
  • Commitment to diversity

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience as a higher education administrator (department chairperson or coordinator) in a four year higher education institution
  • Familiarity with and support of technology to enhance learning and expand programs as well as experience teaching online courses
  • Familiarity with non-teacher education degree programs housed in education colleges
  • Knowledgeable in soliciting external funding and cultivating donor relations
  • Knowledge of trends in higher education and demonstrated ability to translate those into planning for the future of the college
  • Support for international experience and study abroad as well as personal international experience
  • Experience with shared governance, professional development of faculty and a commitment to a collective bargaining environment
  • Minimum of two years K-12 teaching experience
  • Leadership roles within K-12 system

Other Information: The College of Education at Pittsburg State University serves over 1500 students in a variety of programs offered in the three departments that comprise the college. These departments include the following: Health, Human Performance and Recreation; Psychology and Counseling; and Teaching and Leadership.
