For those individuals who are interested in teaching early childhood in birth through third grade
The Early Childhood Birth through third grade unified program will begin in Fall 2008 at Pittsburg State University. This program is an integrative effort by the departments of Curriculum and Instruction, Special Services and Leadership Studies - Early Childhood Special Education, and Family & Consumer Sciences - Early Childhood Development.
Who is this program for?
This program will be of particular interest to those individuals who would like to teach in a 4 year old program, kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade classroom in the public schools. This program will give you a developmental background based on best practices from each of the fields. This will allow you to work in any program where an early childhood certification is essential.

Will I need a minor?
You will not need a minor with this program. You may take one but be aware that it will take extra time to add that into your program. Please consult your advisor about this.
How long will it take?
The program is designed to be completed in four years. This will include some work during at least two summer semesters in addition to the regular semesters in the Fall and Spring.
Will the other programs in those departments still exist?
Curriculum and Instruction will still have their Early Childhood/Late Childhood (Elementary) program, Special Services and Leadership Studies will still have their Masters program and their Early Childhood Special Education minor and Family & Consumer Sciences will still have their traditional Early Childhood Development program.
Why was this new program developed?
For the past 10+ years the Early Childhood Faculty throughout the state have been working on an integrative degree that matches what is found in the research on the early childhood years. The state of Kansas opened this new certification as a possibility in 2005 and a number of programs around the state have already begun with more programs expected. There are a number of other states that have already taken this step and there will be more to follow.
Who will be my advsior?
You will be assigned an advisor from within the faculty in the Curriculum and Instruction department. Other knowledgeable faculty are Marti York from SSLS and Duane Whitbeck from FCS.
When do I need to declare my major?
You will need to decide in your first year if you are to avoid any need to take extra credits. Because there are some differences in general education requirements between College of Education programs and the regular general education package it is important that you consult your advisor early.
What about the Early Childhood Unified program for Birth through Kindergarten?
The ECU B - K program is still in the planning stage. It will be designed for the person who is seeking a certification program in early childhood, but is not interested in teaching in the 1st through the 3rd grades.
Application for admission to education should be made during Explorations. In the case of community college transfer students, application should be made early in the first semester of the junior year during Explorations in Education or Clinical Experience. A minimum grade point average of 2.75 in the general education core courses, grade of "C" or better in CURIN 261 (Explorations in Education), and successful completion of a basic skills test or ACT composition of 24 or higher are required for admission to the teacher education program. Other requirements for admission may be found in the Teacher Education Handbook and the PSU Catalog.
