Welcome to the Department of Family & Consumer Sciences

Welcome to the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at Pittsburg State University. All Family and Consumer Sciences programs of study have a common theme. Each, in some way addresses the social, physical and economic well being of individuals and families as they function in their communities at home and around the world. The programs in the department focus on the fundamental building blocks of human existence - food, shelter, clothing, human relationships, commerce and family life.

Students in our department choose from several undergraduate programs (Early Childhood, Family & Consumer Sciences Teacher Education, Fashion Merchandising, Individual and Family, Interior Design, & Interior Merchandising) and a cooperative graduate program with the Department of Technology Studies (Career and Technical Education - FCS Emphasis).  Students who complete our programs are prepared to help individuals, families, businesses, and communities cope with the challenges and complexities of today's society.

As you make a decision about your college and career goals, I certainly hope that you will consider studying in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.  We look forward to having you as part of our dynamic department.

Career Day 2012

We are looking forward to another exciting Career Day.  This year we are changing our date from the traditional Monday before Thanksgiving to  - October 30, 2012.  This is being done in recognition that FCCLA is having a National Cluster meeting November 16-18, 20012 in Oklahoma City.  By moving our date we know that high schools would not be forced to choose between two such quality experiences.

We held our annual Career Day on November 21, 2011.  High school students from aound the four states area attended and learned about each of the areas of study as well as what job opportunities are available within the broad scope of Family & Consumer Sciences related fields.

 

Accreditation news:

The PSU Early Childhood Preschool Lab has been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children Academy for Early Childhood Program Accreditation. Congratulations to all of the teachers, students, parents and children who make our successful program.
