What is dyslexia?
What is ADHD?
ADHD, a neurobiological diagnosis, involves distractibility, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. We assess attentional difficulties in conjunction with reading difficulties to identify the correct target of intervention.
Approximately 30-50% of children with reading difficulties also have ADHD. Thorough assessment helps distinguish between reading and attentional difficulties.
What is the assessment process like?
Regardless of the referral reason, all individuals undergo assessments for both reading and attention. We often discover cases where what seems like reading difficulties are attentional deficiencies, and vice versa. A full evaluation helps pinpoint the specific cause of difficulty.
In instances where a student struggles at school despite good reading skills and no attentional issues, further assessments delve into potential psychological or emotional causes like depression and anxiety. Parents receive an evaluation copy, empowering them to make informed decisions.
The student/examinee, teacher, and parents will receive surveys to determine the assessment procedure.
Secret Codes! is a specialized kindergarten reading curriculum featuring Able Ant, designed to impart foundational reading skills.
5-20% of children face difficulties due to the complexity of the opaque English writing system. Secret Codes simplifies this system, aiming to prevent reading difficulties. Scientific evaluations show its effectiveness, with teachers reporting significant student advancements. The curriculum's 127 activities progress from basic codes to reading and writing paragraphs, emphasizing crucial decoding and blending skills.
Interventionists play a crucial role at the Center for READing, and the quality of services provided relies entirely on their motivation, reliability, and professionalism. Pitt State psychology students are eligible to become paraprofessional tutors. Funding opportunities are available through programs like the Kansas Youth Educational Services (YES) and America Reads.
The fees associated with our services are significantly lower than those of comparable organizations in the state, thanks to your generosity. Your donation to the Pittsburg State University Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, is fully tax-deductible. All contributions specifically allocated to the Center for READing will be utilized for science-based evaluations, individualized interventions, advocacy efforts, and sponsoring those in need.
