Blake West and members of PSU KNEA Student Organization, Fall 2011
PSU KNEA Members met together August 30, 2011 at the Wilkinson Alumni Center for their annual fall Welcome Back Dinner. Special guests included Tony White, UNISERV Southeast Director; Tina Springer, Joplin R8 East Middle School 6th Grade Math Teacher; and Blake West, Director, Kansas National Education Association. Tina charmed us with an update and presentation on the efforts to rebuild her classroom at East Middle School in Joplin, Missouri after the building was destroyed by the May 22, 2011 Joplin tornado. PSU KNEA adopted Tina's classroom as part of the Joplin 8 School District / Bright Futures Joplin Foundation, which organized an "adopt-a-classroom" initiative in the wake of the destruction. Tina teaches 6th grade math students at East Middle School. She was, of course, presented with a stuffed gorilla to take back to her students, and we wish her well and will continue to support her throughout the year.
